Changing the RCX’s batteries within 20 seconds sounds difficult, but is actually not too hard with some practice. My RCX is sitting in my current collection just waiting to be used. Programming with NQC was my first programming experience and taught me so much about programming, compiling and using the command line. I’m having troube downloading firmware or otherwise transferring large programs or files to the RCX! Nice to hear that you got it working – there are occasional posts here asking for help getting RCX to play nice with modern operating systems and vice versa.

For many years, the common wisdom was that the USB infrared tower was not supported on bit versions of windows, the reason being that LEGO never wrote a bit driver for the USB tower. You’ll probably also want to buy some combination of motors and sensors, depending on your application.

I haven’t read these books, and they were published near the time of release of the RCX, so some of the information may now be obsolete or irrelevant.
