This solution applies to the Dell Latitude D though the problem only occurs at random intervals in my experience. So I noticed that the E was having weird audio glitches with Vista while under light loads. Of course, if you do that you’ve got to completely reload your Operating system. Applied and the effect is really good – no more “scratching”. For humor, I found that Windows 7 Beta worked out of the box for audio on the E but ya’ll probably won’t want to have to wait for the end of the year for that one. Don’t they know people listen to music?

My guess is that the previous sata driver wasn’t stable enough and was causing the audio problem as a side effect. Danish regional settings I have had no skips at all since I applied this solution: Still no audio problems. As all of you, my Audi sucks a bit. I couldn’t get the WebCam software to work even after installing the updated driver. I ran into this problem with all mp3 files and I tried just about everything on the help forums including a fresh load of XP and Vista respectively on a different hard drive.
I also ran some of the built-in 3D screen savers in Windows XP. Hope this update helps you guys still struggling with this out there.
The other thing that cause this problem is using a non-oem windows. I got a few latency spikes of microsecs but I couldn’t notice any audio problems.

The Dell tech couldn’t figure out what was wrong either and just suggested I reinstall Vista. During this time I do not only get serious audio problems and the mouse jumps when moved.
